Carrot Insurance launched in 2012 with the aim of making the roads safer for everyone through the use of telematics to promote greater awareness of driving style in relation to accident risk factors and reward customers for driving safely.

As a digitally focused and award-winning insurance brand, Carrot grew quickly before recognising that it needed a strategic technology partner to support its longer term expansion, which included achieving ambitious growth targets as it looked to diversify, grow and add new product streams and lines.

It was also cognisant that there had been significant disruption in the marketplace as a result of the pandemic, combined with a more highly regulated environment, demand for greater digitisation and increased competitive pressures. It was therefore looking for a technology partner that would support it in adapting effectively to these market changes going forward.

How AWS was leveraged as part of the solution

CDL is a market leader in the telematics space, with highly automated processes for the end-to-end customer journey, fully integrated within its cloud-based insurance ecosystem.

Following a comprehensive market review to support its digital and data strategy, Carrot selected CDL's Strata platform as a proven high volume retail solution that would deliver both the operational efficiency to enable profitable growth and the ability to offer data-driven consumer engagement models for telematics and mainstream insurance products.

Strata is a fully componentised platform, enabling the sale and administration of policies, including telematics-based insurance, via a range of channels, including web, price comparison sites, contact center, mobile and voice devices.

Used by some of the UK's largest personal lines providers, the system generates millions of transactions each day, making AWS the ideal cloud-hosting platform to deliver the resilience and scalability required to handle these volumes.

As a Differentiated Software Partner in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Partner Network (APN), CDL has a strong track record in deploying Strata on AWS. It also holds Financial Services Competency status.

AWS solutions leveraged for Carrot Insurance include:

Global deployment options: to ensure resilience and regulatory compliance. These include Multiple Availability Zones and the Amazon Elastic Container Service (ECS) to enable applications to be run in a managed cluster of Amazon instances, as well as Amazon S3 object storage to give access to the same highly scalable, reliable and fast data storage infrastructure that Amazon uses to run its own global network of web sites.
Amazon RDS Support: Amazon RDS engines are used to bring data together into a consistent model that enables powerful analytics capability and integration with visualisation dashboards to deliver real time business intelligence. CDL also utilises RDS features such as database snapshots, enhanced monitoring, performance insights and tight integration with IAM.
